We are excited to​ present Belonging in collaboration with Cultur·Able and The Layered Onion.

 

When we placed a call for art asking for responses to the creation and categorization of community we were surprised to see the vast majority of our submissions be extremely personal and intimate storylines. This perhaps speaks to the isolating nature of existence as a disabled, mad, or chronically ill individual within the current medical-industrial complex. We believe that it speaks to how powerfully community, belonging, or lack thereof can impact our relationship with ourselves.

Data Rock (Take Me Somewhere Nice) is a series of abstract landscapes created by sequentially copying the colour of every pixel in six 100px x 100px images and pasting it successively to create entirely new images from the sampled pixels. Interestingly, each sampled pixel is already a sample of an original image. However, as numerous theorists have pointed out, the fictions of original and copy are so entwined that it is impossible to say where one begins and the other ends. Pixels interest me because they are the smallest controllable element of a picture. Moreover, the aesthetics of copy and paste—which is nothing more than the transfer of data—is, to me, the epitome of the transformative philosophy of sampling, and is the perfect response to the bombardment of media imagery. I believe that everyone should be able to create art, and thus meaning, out of the cultural materials of the everyday.

Managers, Exiles, and Firefighters present multiple renderings of different parts of myself drawn on the canvas. They are characters I identified while undergoing therapy to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Charcoal, ink, graphite, and my hair on canvas (120 in x 60 in). Process of Becoming explores duality within the self – the idea that there are multiple selves within each person that all work in tandem to keep the whole safe. I’m curious about how the external body can be used to describe these internal feelings of conflict and mediation between different parts of the self. This piece is a byproduct of my practice of relinquishing absolute control over my work. It's caked with the material - ink, charcoal, gesso, graphite, and frizzy strands of my own hair that I found on my studio floor.

My scoliosis is to everybody around me; my family and friends see me and can not notice my crooked back, and the scoliosis community thinks I'm exaggerating my pain because it is not visible at first sight. Only X-rays can show a glimpse of the pain. I fit nowhere with this invisible agony.

This self-portrait of myself reading The Bell Jar with Sylvia Plath in the tub with me is an exploration between a mentally ill viewer/reader relating to famous mentally ill artists/writers in an attempt to cope and find themselves. While I am dressed up as Plath, my appearance is also digitally manipulated to look more like her. As a woman with bipolar disorder, I mainly deal with depression and have spent years of my life being suicidal. I have often searched for others' art and writing to validate my pain like many others suffering mentally. I have reminded myself that viscerally resonating with an artist's story doesn't mean their tragedies become your own. The prose I wrote to accompany this piece is based on an experience I had while reading The Bell Jar years ago while tying in Plath's biography
